Words are very powerful. When talking about suicide, we need to be careful and sensitive with our choice of words. As a general rule, use a factual language.

  • A suicide attempt
  • Die by suicide
  • Take one's own life
  • Kill oneself
  • A suicide death
  • A person at risk of suicide

Some expressions have negative connotations and may contribute to the stigma attached to suicide.

  • A failed suicide attempt
  • A successful/unsuccessful suicide
  • A complete/incomplete suicide
  • Committed suicide
  • A suicide-prone person
  • An epidemic of suicide
